Printer driver installation

Download and install the correct printer driver safely from the official source.

Installing the wrong driver is one of the most common causes of printer errors, offline status, and print quality problems. This guide explains how to find your exact model number, locate the official driver download, remove old conflicting drivers, and complete installation on Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS.

Where to find your driver

Always download drivers from the official manufacturer website.

Third-party driver sites often bundle unwanted software or provide outdated, incorrect, or even harmful drivers. Use only these official sources.

Go to support.hp.com. Click Software, Drivers and Firmware. Enter your printer model number in the search field. Select your operating system from the dropdown. Download the Full Feature Software and Drivers package — not just the basic driver.

Driver Install Checklist 4 steps to a clean driver installation

Skipping the uninstall step is the most common reason new driver installs fail.

Installation process

How to install a printer driver correctly.

1

Find your printer model number

The model number is printed on a label on the front, top, or bottom of the printer. It usually looks like HP OfficeJet Pro 9015, Canon PIXMA MX492, Epson EcoTank ET-2803, or Brother HL-L2350DW. Write it down exactly as shown — do not abbreviate it — because the driver search requires an exact match.

2

Remove the existing driver first

On Windows: open Control Panel, Programs, Uninstall a Program. Look for your printer software from the manufacturer. Uninstall it completely. Also open Device Manager, expand Print queues, right-click your printer, and select Uninstall device. Check the box to delete the driver software if that option appears. Restart the computer before installing the new driver.

3

Download and run the installer

Download the full driver package from the official manufacturer website (see above). Do not use a basic or universal driver for initial setup — always start with the full package. Run the installer as administrator: right-click the file and select Run as administrator. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, choose your connection type (USB or Network/Wi-Fi). Connect the USB cable or confirm the printer is on the network when the installer asks you to.

4

Add the printer and test

After the installer finishes, open Settings, Bluetooth and devices, Printers and scanners on Windows, or System Settings, Printers and Scanners on Mac. Confirm the printer appears. Set it as the default printer. Print a test page from the printer properties or from any document. If it prints correctly, the driver installation is complete.

Driver problems

Common driver errors and how to fix them.

Driver unavailable error

This usually means the installed driver does not match the printer model or operating system. Uninstall the current driver completely and reinstall the correct version from the manufacturer site.

Check that you downloaded the driver for the exact OS version (Windows 10 vs Windows 11, 32-bit vs 64-bit).

Installer fails to complete

Run the installer as administrator. Temporarily disable your antivirus software during installation — some security programs block driver installers from writing to system directories. Re-enable antivirus after installation.

If the installer still fails, use the Windows printer troubleshooter from Settings before trying again.

Printer appears with yellow exclamation in Device Manager

A yellow warning icon means the driver is not working correctly. Right-click the printer in Device Manager and select Update driver, then Search automatically for drivers, or manually point it to the downloaded driver folder.

If automatic update does not fix it, uninstall the device and reinstall from scratch.

Driver installed but printer offline

The driver installed successfully but the printer still shows offline. This is a network or queue issue, not a driver issue. Clear the print queue, restart the printer, and confirm the correct default printer is selected.

See the printer offline fix guide for the full sequence of steps.
